February 2008 Safety Thoughts

Hearing Protection

by Dave Hansen, Safety Officer

This month's Pig Tales, Doug wrote an article called What??? in which he talked about hearing loss as related to riding. As Doug says, this is an important, but much neglected safety issue that needs to be acknowledged & discussed, so I'd like to expand on Doug's article.

I've been riding motorcycles since 1964 & haven't suffered from anything other than selective hearing loss. However, Lynn has been riding as my passenger for roughly 120k miles & has suffered permanent hearing loss, more pronounced in her right ear. The difference is I use hearing protection, but Lynn didn't because she didn't like wearing ear plugs. Now she wears hearing aids.

So the question to be answered is - How do you protect against tinnitus & permanent hearing loss?
